    The day the Samling changed from a house-to-hire to a hotel proper was an exciting one for long weekenders that visit Windermere. This was last August, although the gabled house still retains a country-house atmosphere, with no reception, hotel bar or lobby. There's simply a drinks cabinet from which you help yourself, and newspapers are scattered around the sitting room.

The pace at the Samling is really easy-going: breakfast in bed, sandwiches and tea when you want them, but no lunch. Dinner is informal and might feature braised pig's head or roast vegetables with poached lobster.

The Samling is likely to be the cosiest hotel you'll ever stay in, with open fires, squashy sofas, wingback chairs, thick-pile carpets, tweeds and Blackwatch tartans (the designer, Amanda Rosa, was responsible for the original look of Glasgow's One Devonshire Gardens).

The best room is Tyan, Wedgwood-blue, overlooking Lake Windermere and the 67-acre estate of trim rockeries and woodland backed by russet fells that serves as the backdrop for the Samling.
